Specialist Home Care Service

   

Recruitment, Training and Career at MAC  

It is compulsory for all carers to undertake and complete the induction course before commencing any care duties. This will involve commitment and participation in ongoing set programmes.

Person Centred Care

This assists the carer to develop their understanding of how principles of care should be reflected in their day-to-day practices by exploring the values of individuality, rights, choice, privacy, independence, dignity, respect and partnership. It goes on to look at the 'right' service users have to take risks in their lives and how the care plan and risk assessment can assist to protect individuals from harm.

Role of the Carer

This introduces home carers to the types of tasks they might be expected to carry out and the range of service users they may come into contact with; from young adults with learning difficulties through to older people. This also considers the importance of working within professional boundaries and why it is necessary to understand and follow policies and procedures.

Needs of the Service User

This module introduces home carers to the broad range of service user needs that they are likely to support or deliver. In exploring these across a variety of service user groups, including mental health and disability, it aims to establish the importance of recognising difference and individual need and will help develop an understanding of the types of need. These can range from physical & emotional to those of dealing with finances and housing issues. It also introduces the range of differing communication methods and behaviours presented by service users, including confusion and raises awareness of medication and medical conditions. It goes on to consider how to respond to incidences of abuse and loss of life.

Moving and Handling

This demonstrates how to safety assist service users to move with and without equipment and develops carers’ understanding of how to reduce the risk of back injuries, along with their rights and responsibilities under health and safety law. This explains the dangers of manual handling of service users and explains why carers cannot safely lift or support the weight of residents. The role of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations in enforcing safe practices is also explained. All the most common situations for handling residents in the domiciliary setting are covered.

Health and Safety

This training explores health and safety within the service users own home. In considering the home carer’s duty of care to service user and yourself. It aims to improve awareness of common hazards about the home whilst considering the importance of referring to risk assessments and care plans. We discuss the need for improved awareness of the importance of good housekeeping when storing or disposing of chemicals, dangerous substances or sharp objects and develops an awareness of the need for safe practice in moving & handling, food hygiene, infection control and fire safety. We briefly introduce the need to consider personal safety when visiting service users homes and the importance of raising issues of concern with management and reporting injury and ill health.

Fire Safety

This training explores fire safety within the service users own home. In focussing on fire prevention principles and home carer obligations, it introduces the three elements that come together to start a fire (known as the fire triangle) and considers common causes of fire within the domestic setting. This helps to improve awareness of the importance of good housekeeping as part of an effective approach towards fire prevention and develops an understanding of how to respond in the event of an emergency.

Food Hygiene

This programme explores the vital role home carers have in making sure that they prepare food that is safe to eat. It covers the range of factors that home carers must appreciate when preparing food for service users, and aims to consider the causes and effects of food poisoning. This helps you to develop an understanding of how to handle, store and prepare food properly and improves awareness of the importance of good personal hygiene, including when it is essential to wash hands. Also explored is the need for working within a clean kitchen environment.
